| As of this writing, there are over 170 viticultural areas that have been established in the United States by the U.S. Tax and Trade Bureau and over 100 are in California. No sane person can name them all without referring to the list.
We've provided you with some tables that will sort out the viticultural areas in various ways to give you a better idea of the prevalence of AVAs in the United States. California AVAs by effective date Viticultural areas are an American thing and, because of that, they come in many shapes, sizes, and flavors. Viticultural areas are not considered quality designations by the U.S. government, but winemakers try very hard, for the most part, to use them as indicators of quality.
